Understanding Adapter Rings

 
There has occasionally been confusion during installation regarding the adapter ring required for RST and RXT clutches. Some kits do not include a flywheel (sold separately), and proper adapter ring selection is critical for correct fitment.
 
To simplify part numbers, reduce development costs, and keep pricing reasonable, McLeod engineered three primary adapter rings that cover the majority of applications. Each clutch kit includes the correct ring — but identifying and orienting it properly is key, as the rings are not stamped for specific engine families.
 

Large Red Adapter Ring

 
Commonly found in part numbers beginning with 6911 or 6921.
Designed for large-diameter flywheels, including:
 

• Chevy 168T
• Chrysler 143T, 172T
• Ford 164T, 176T, 180T, 184T
• Buick, Olds, Pontiac 160T, 166T

Small Black Adapter Ring

 
Typically used in part numbers starting with 6913 or 6923.
Fits small-diameter flywheels such as:
 

• Chevy 153T
• Chrysler 130T
• Ford 157T
• Buick, Olds, Pontiac 153T, 156T

Large Gold Metric Adapter Ring

 
Most common in part numbers beginning with 6912 or 6932.
Designed for metric flywheels found in newer model vehicles, including:
 

• Chevrolet/Pontiac 168T LS-X (LS1/LS6 flat-style flywheel only)
• Ford 164T Modular 4.6L, 5.0L Coyote, 5.4L
  • 6-bolt pressure plate pattern only
